WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The John G. Snowden Memorial Library at Lycoming College has received a Gryphon Book Truck from the Library Supplies & Furnishings Division of the Brodart Company, based in Williamsport, Pa. The idea for the donation came about when a Brodart employee and Lycoming alumnus responded to a request from the library to borrow one of the trucks for the summer.

The book truck, which is a specialized cart for moving large quantities of books and other materials, will help the library transport items during remodeling, which will take place this summer.

“In May and June of this year, we are going to take all the books on the third floor and move them down to the second floor, and take all the books on the second floor and move them up to the third floor,” said Janet Hurlbert, associate dean and director of library services at Lycoming. “Most of our book trucks are too small for such a venture.”

After asking Lycoming alumnus Adam Allen, the marketing manager at Brodart, to borrow or rent two book trucks for the project, Hurlbert was surprised to learn that a book truck was going to be donated to the library.

“The Gryphon Book Truck, donated by Brodart, has a ‘Sure Track System,’ which features center casters that convert from swivel to locking and facilitate improved movement over uneven surfaces,” said Judith Spotts, a spokesperson for Brodart. “This will help the College move the books easily into and out of elevators during the renovation process.”

Allen said he is glad to help his alma mater improve its services to students.

“I am thrilled to be in the position of giving back to Lycoming,” he said. “I am especially thankful to Snowden Library, as well as to their professional and helpful staff, for all the years of service they have provided to the many thousands of students who, just like me, found the library to be a valuable resource for furthering their education.”

Brodart’s Library Supplies & Furnishings Division distributes more than 60,000 products, including book trucks, office furniture and other supplies, to schools and libraries throughout North America and internationally. The Brodart Company is known for its book jacket covers, which were invented in 1939 by Arthur Brody, the founder of Brodart.
