Softball falls in season-opening double header

DANVILLE, Va. — In its season-opening double header, the Lycoming College Lady Warriors’ softball team fell to Averett College 8-0 in the first game and 7-2 in the second game on Thursday, March 5. Courtney Black led Lycoming, getting four hits in her seven at bats.

Lycoming falls to 0-2 on the season, while Averett improves to 2-2.

In game one, Manda Peck was the lead-off batter, hitting a single and then stealing second. Lauren Carey was walked, but Lycoming was unable to convert a run. In the second inning, Black got on base on a grounder towards the shortstop for the first of her two hits in the game. On the mound for the Warriors was Shauna Starr, who pitched five and two-thirds innings, pitching through 27 at bats.

Five innings into the second game, Lycoming scored its first run of the season. Peck singled on a ball to left field, and eventually advanced to third before Black drove the ball towards the second basemen, allowing Peck to score the run. In the sixth inning, the Warriors scored again, this time with Marissa Hastings touching home. Capitalizing on several Cougar mistakes, Lycoming advanced Hastings to third with Kelly Prendergast getting to first on a wild pitch and Jessica Williams reaching on an error, allowing Hastings to get to home plate.

The Lady Warriors will be in action all weekend at the Beach Blast, held in Virginia Beach and hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. The games are set to start Friday, March 6 as Lycoming faces off against Randolph-Macon and York with game time set for 2 p.m.
