Free Family Show to Be a Composer Encounter

Free Family Show to Be a Composer Encounter

On Saturday, February 21st, at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, the WSO and the Susquehanna University Orchestra will perform the WSO’s annual Free Family Show: a concert drama called “Composer Encounter.” Music begins at 2:00 p.m.

An all-ages piece for audience participation, “Composer Encounter” is described as “a condensed music history lesson” in which Handel, Mozart, Sibelius, and Ives come back to life to teach a younger composer (“Dave”) about their music. “Composer Encounter” was created by David T. Little, who composed an original work for the show. The work combines elements of the four composers’ music: Handel’s Concerto Grosso No. 1 in G, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, Sibelius’sFinlandia, and a song by Ives called “Circus Band.”

The WSO Free Family Shows have become a community tradition. One fan said, “We’ve been coming since Dan Kamin’s “Classical Clown” and loved it when Davy Jones narrated Peter and the Wolf. The Symphony is giving something wonderful to the community, and it helps young families that the concert is totally free!”

No tickets are required for the Free Family Show (donations will be accepted); seating is open. The concert is sponsored by Wegmans and the Woodcock Foundation for the Appreciation of the Arts. Visit the WSO website to hear sound clips.
