Williamsport, PA-After Thursday’s heartbreaking overtime loss in Altoona, the Williamsport Millionaires needed a home win to lift their spirits and to stay in 1st place in the District 2-4 AAAA standings. They hoped that the Simon Gratz Bulldogs, a powerhouse from the Philadelphia Public League, would fit the bill.

Turns out the Millionaires got their wish tonight. The Millionaires routed the Bulldogs 73-45 before a near capacity crowd at the Williamsport Area High School Gymnasium. The Millionaires are now 16-3 with 3 games remaining on the schedule, while the Bulldogs rode back to North Philadelphia 13-6.

Dontahe Jordan led the Millionaires tonight with 20 points. Jadiah Lynch added 16 including 4 3 pointers, and Darryl Worthy added 14 off the bench. Tyree Smith led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Tyreese Oden added 12.

The Millionaires got on the board first on a made foul shot by Thomas James with 6:49 left in the opening stanza, then the Millionaire offense took a siesta. The Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run on baskets by Tyree Smith, Andrew Moye, and antoine Bland. The Bulldogs would hold the Millionaires scoreless for 4:28 before Dontahe Jordan would hit the first basket of the game for the Millionaires. It was a feeling out process for the Millionaires and the Bulldogs in the first period as it was the first time the teams played each other since meeting in the McDonald’s Classic at Gannon University in Erie, PA, in January of 2000. After the first period, the Bulldogs led 10-6.

Joseph Reid, a 6’8″ center for the Bulldogs, would open up the scoring in the second period to make the score 12-6. Then the bottom dropped out for the Bulldogs. The Millionaires went on a 12-0 run holding the Bulldogs scoreless for 4:31. The Millionaires would take the lead for good on 2 foul shots by Dontahe Jordan with 5:00 left in the half. At halftime, the Millionaires led 22-16. It was a low scoring half for 2 high octane teams.

The Millionaires would blow things open in the second half outscoring the Bulldogs 51-29. The Millionaires attacked and broke the Bulldogs’ 2-3 zone defense and forced the Bulldogs into a man to man defense. Despite the height advantage the Bulldogs enjoyed, it was neutralized by the Millionaires. At the turn for home, the Millionaires led 45-27. You couldn’t blame the Millionaire faithful if they weren’t worried that the lead may vanish like at Altoona Thursday night.

The Millionaires would put those fears to rest in the final period outscoring the Bulldogs 28-18. The offense put the gas pedal to the floor and forced numerous turnovers by the Bulldogs. The biggest lead tonight was the final margin of 28 points. It was enough to shock any basketball fan.

The Millionaire JV squad also beat the Bulldogs tonight 67-48. Travis Kerschner led the way with 17 points, while Codie Engel added 11, and Blake Adams added 10. Raceen Beasley led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Aaron Williams added 11.

The next game for the Millionaires is Tuesday, 2/10/09, when the State College Little Lions make the 60 mile journey to Williamsport. The start times are back to normal with a 6 pm JV start and a 7:30 varsity tilt.
