Millionaires Hold Off Friars 81-70

By Ken Myers

Norristown, PA-Millionaire head coach Allen Taylor freely admitted on the team bus heading down the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike that he really did not know what the Monsignor Bonner Friars were going to throw at his Williamsport team. He was unable to get a scouting report on the team due to scheduling issues.

Turns out that the fears could have been put to rest. After surviving a furious fourth period rally by the Friars, the Millionaires finally put things away beating the Friars 81-70 last night at the 10th annual Kobe Bryant Classic at Norristown High School. The Millionaires are now 12-2, while the Friars fall to 6-10. It was the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Jadiah Lynch led the Milionaires with 21 points. Lynch also received game MVP honors for the Millionaires. Dontahe Jordan added 17, and Isaiah Twine added 16. Keefer Francis was the only player in double figures for the Friars with 21 points. Francis also received game MVP honors for the Friars.

The Millionaires jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a 3 pointer and a normal 2 pointer by Dontahe Jordan. Keefer Francis would get the Friars on the board with a made foul shot 2:20 into the game. Jadiah Lynch would hit a 3 pointer to increase the lead to 8-1 before the Friars would call a timeout to calm things down for the players. Apparently it worked. They would keep things close for the rest of the period, but after one period, the Millionaires led 16-11.

After the feeling out process of the opening period, the Millionaires opened things up by scoring 25 points in the period. Their biggest lead of the half was 15 points. At halftime, the Millionaires headed to the locker room with 41-28 lead.

The third period was a continuation of the second for the Millionaires. They were able to score when they need to against the Friars, and they were forcing the Friars to miss quite a few easy shots. At the turn for home, the Millionaires led 60-46. The Millionaire faithful that made the 3 hour+ journey to Montgomery County were hoping that the Millionaires would seal the game up early in the final period.

Things did not happen as expected in the final period. The Millionaires would go ice cold early in the period allowing the Friars to go on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit as low as 5 points before Millionaire coach Allen Taylor called a timeout to try to stop the bleeding. That worked for a little bit with the lead increasing back up to 8 points, but the Friars would cut it back to 3 on a three pointer by Jamal Melvin. The Millionaires would finally put the game away in the final 90 seconds.

The Millionaires led from start to finish over the Friars. Their biggest lead was 15 points in the second period. The closest the Friars would get in the game 3 points late in the first period.

There was no JV game at Norristown last night. The Millionaires return to the road for their next game on Monday, 1/26/09, when they make the 45 minute ride to Danville to take on the Ironmen. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to follow.

Linescore of the game:
