On January 24th at the Community Arts Center, the WSO will join the State Ballet Theatre of Russia to perform a masterpiece of traditional romantic ballet, Giselle.A ghost story about love and redemption from the world beyond, Giselle has been enchanting audiences for more than 175 years. Giselle is a simple peasant girl who is betrayed by love. She goes mad and dies of a broken heart. She becomes a ghost and is ordered to destroy the man who caused her pain, although she is still deeply in love with him. The ballet deals with the powerful forces of nature. The second act is referred to as the “white act” because everyone wears white, as seen here in a ballet master class. Giselle is portrayed by dancer Xiomara Reyes (photo at right).

First performed by the Paris Opera in 1841, Giselle was composed by Adolphe Adam (1803-1856), a prolific composer of operas and ballets. (He also composed the music for the Christmas carol,”O Holy Night.”)

Tickets for Giselle range from $25 to $45 and may be purchased through the Community Arts Center by phone (570-326-2424 or 800-432-9382) or online.
