Maurer and Zerbee named Warrior co-Athletes of the Week

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Mike Maurer (wrestling) and Jessica Zerbee (women’s basketball) have been named the Warrior co-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 11.

Maurer, a native of Towanda, Pa., posted four wins at the 149 pound weight class in two days at the 21st Annual Budd Whitehill National Duals. Maurer was unbeaten on the opening day, defeating Springfield’s Oscar Orellana (11-4) and #16 Wilkes’ Erik Smith (4-1).

He then earned a major decision (12-3) over Frankie Davis of King’s to start the second day and followed that with an 8-2 victory over Mike Bressler of #27 Messiah. Maurer dropped his final match of the tournament, falling 9-4 against Dan Mizener of John Carroll in the fifth-place match.

Maurer was one of four wrestlers to post 4-1 records during the tournament, including Tom Barger (141), Troy Hayre (174) and Bryan Kopesky (197).

Zerbee, a native of Duncansville, Pa., had a breakout game against Widener on Sunday, Jan. 11. She finished the game with season highs of 21 points and 8 rebounds. She was a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

Zerbee and teammate Allison Mock combined for 13 points in the final 1:25 of the game, leading the Lady Warriors to their first conference win in the last 11 league games. She also posted four points, five rebounds and five steals against Elizabethtown earlier in the week.

Lycoming’s sports information office will announce a Warrior Athlete of the Week in each week throughout the 2008-09 academic year. The athlete will be featured on the homepage of the athletics Web site, http://www.lycoming.edu/athletics.
