Pottsville, PA-On paper, last night’s matchup between the Williamsport Millionaires and the Pocono Mountain East Cardinals looked like an interesting game. Both teams came in with just about the same record (the Millionaires 7-2, the Cardinals 7-1), and both teams had a loss to a common opponent, York William Penn. Would this game be a close one?

The Millionaires would answer this question in the negative by breaking the game open again in the second half to beat the Cardinals 66-40 at the Pottsville HS Challenge played at Martz Hall on the campus of the DHH Lingel Middle School before a disappointing, sparse crowd. The Millionaires improve to 8-2, while the Cardinals drop to 7-2.

Dontahe Jordan led the Millionaires with 26 points including several dunks. Dom Adams-Coffey also contributed 10 points of the bench for the Millionaires. Kendall Harris and Kyheim Hall eaxh led the Cardinals with 11 points.

Dontahe Jordan would open the scoring for the Millionaires 28 seconds into the game.. Kyheim Hall woyld answer back with 2 foul shots to tie up the game, then Hall would hit another foul shot to give the Caardinals their first lead at 3-2 with 6:12 left in the opening period. Thomas James would regain the lead for the Millionaires, then Kendall Harris would regain the lead for the Cardinals for the last time with 5:59 left in the period. After another Harris basket with 4:10 left, the Millionaires would regain the lead for good on a Thomas James basket with 3:12 left. The Cardinals would score again on a Joe Marra basket with 34.5 seconds left in the period, but then they went quiet for the rest of the period, and Keith Haynes hit an incredible shot at the horn to give the Millionaires a 12-9 lead..

The Millionaires continued their dominance in the second period by going on a 9-0 run and holding the Cardinals scoreless for 5:20. Including the time from the end of the first period, the Cardinals were held scoreless for 5:54.5. They finally broke the ice on a Kendall Harris bucket with 2:40 left in the first half. A basket by Shaun Hines of the Cardinals was the only other scoring of the periodfor the Cardinals as they trudged to the locker room trailing the Millionaires 23-13. Nobody in attendance at Martz Hall expected the score to be this low at halftime.

The Millionnaires would break things open in the second half outscoring the Cardinals 43-27. They steadily built their lead and forced numerous critical turnovers by the Cardinals. The biggest lead for the Millionaires was 27 points with 25.2 seconds left in the game, and the game couldn’t end soon enough for the Cardinals to make the ride back to Swiftwater (near Tobyhanna) in Monroe County.

There was no JV game last night in Pottsville. On Friday, the Millionaire JV squad beat the Wyalusing Rams at Wyalusing 78-43. The next game for the Millionaires is Tuesday, 1/6/09, when they make the 105 mile trip to the county seat of Blair County, Hollidaysburg, to take on the Golden Tigers. Start times are the same as usual.

Linnescore of the game:

Williamsport: 12-11-19-24=66
Pocono Mountain East: 9-4-15-12=40
