Williamsport, PA-In a somewhat lethargic effort, the Williamsport Millionaires beat the Owen J. Roberts Wildcats 79-63 last night in the nightcap of the Best Western/WRAK Shootout at the Magic Dome held at the Williamsport Area High School gymnasium. The Millionaires are now 7-1 with a 6 game winning streak, while the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season falling to 8-1.

Darryl Worthy led the Millionaires with 18 points off the bench. Dontahe Jordan added 14, and Jadiah Lynch added 10. For the Wildcats, David Vining led the way with 20 points. Tyler Setzler added 16, and Ryan Brumfield added 12.

The early part of the game definitely showed that this was the first ever game between Williamsport and Owen J. Roberts. The Millionaires opened up the scoring on a foul shot by Shariff Monroe with 5:08 left in the opening stanza. After another 1:29, the Wildcats would answer back and take the lead on a 3 pointer by David Vining. The Millionaires would tie it up on a basket by Thomas James 20 seconds later, then the Wildcats would regain the lead for what turned out to be the rest of the opening period on a basket by Kevin Henry. Both teams were feeling each other out seeing what the other would do but also missing very easy shots. After the first period, the Wildcats led 15-10 making the near capacity crowd very nervous.

There were several more lead changes in the second period as the Millionaires would cut the Wildcats’ lead and regain the lead on their own. The Wildcats would answer back in kind to regain the lead, but the Millionaires’ strong offense and tight pressure defense would hold the Wildcats to only 9 points in the second period. The Millionaires would regain the lead for good on a basket by Jadiah Lynch with 1:20 left in the first half. At halftime, the Millionaires led 30-24.

The Millionaires would break things open in the third period but could not make the Wildcats roll over and play dead. They broke open their lead increasing it as high as 13 points, but the Wildcats would always mount a comeback to try to regain the lead. The closest they would get for the game was an 8 point deficit halfway through the third period. After three periods, the Millionaires led 56-43 when Darryl Worthy hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer from midcourt. What would the final period bring for the Millionaires?

The Millionaires finally put things away in the final period outscoring the Wildcats 23-20. The Millionaires increased their lead as high as 19 points in the final stanza. There were 9 lead changes and 1 tie in the game before the Millionaires took the lead for good. The game was also marked with numerous delays due to the roof over the Williamsport gym leaking due to recent snowmelt and cleaning up the wet spots on the court.

The Millionaires will be meeting the Penn Wood Patriots in the championship of the Best Western/WRAK Shootout at the Magic Dome on Tuesday, 12/30/08 @ 7:30. The Patriots (7-0) destroyed the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons (4-3) out of suburban Washington, DC 89-48 in a game that was finished under the mercy rule for the final 16 seconds. The meeting between the Millionaires and the Patriots will be the second ever meeting between the two schools and the first ever during the regular season. In the only ever meeting between the Millionaires and Penn Wood, the Millionaires beat them in a state playoff game in 1992 that was played on a snowy night @ Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County. The consolation game between Owen J. Roberts and Bethesda Chevy Chase will start @ 6 pm.
