State College, PA-Williamsport vs State College. It’s a rivalry between two schools separated by 60 miles that has seen some good, bad, and ugly basketball over the years. Highlights include a 31 game winning streak by the Millionaires during a 19 year period and a 8 game winning streak by the Little Lions to break the Millionaires’ streak. What could the fans expect this time?

They witnessed one of the ugliest games in recent memory as the Millionaires beat the Little Lions 53-37 last night at the State College Area High School gymnasium. It was the lowest offensive output of the season for the Millionaires (6-1) and the second lowest for the Little Lions (4-3).

The Millionaires were led by Jadiah Lynch with 15 points. Isaiah Twine added 11, and Dontahe Jordan added 10. Jamar Smack was the only Little Lion in double figures with 11 points.

The Millionaires roared out to a quick 9-0 lead, despite the mixture of zone defenses that State College head coach Drew Frank threw at them, on baskets Sean Ruane and Jadiah Lynch. Millionaire fans that made the trip to Centre County were figuring that they were going to witness another blowout like last Saturday vs Steelton-Highspire. The Little Lions would have something to say about that. They would reel off 7 consecutive points and shock all the Williamsport fans in attendance. After the Millionaires put together a baby streak of 4 points to end the period, the Millionaires led the Little Lions 13-7 after the first stanza.

The second period was not much better than the first. Neither team could really hit their shots with any regularity. The Millionaires did open up their lead during the last 2:00, and as the teams went to the locker room at halftime, the Millionaires still led 28-15. Nobody expected the score to be that low at halftime.

The third period was a repeat of the first half as neither team could get a good shooting streak going. Both teams were as cold with their shooting as the frigid weather outside State College High School. In the final period, the Millionaires would steadily increase their lead getting it as high as 17 points early in the final period. The Millionaires led from start to finish.

The offciating crew of Dick Wagner, Gary Zimmerman, and Sean Albright met with much displeasure from both the Williamsport and State College fans over perceived slights in foul calling. They whistled the Millionaires for 3 technical fouls- 1 each on Williamsport coach Allen Taylor, Isaiah Twine, and Codie Engel.

In JV action, the Millionaires edged the Little Lions 57-52. Thomas Burk led the Millionaires with 18 points, while Ben Sallade led the Little Lions with19 points, and Shane Dorner added 18.

The next game for the Millionaires is next Monday, 12/29/08, in the Best Western/WRAK Shootout at the Magic Dome. In the first game at 6 pm, Bethesda-Chevy Chase (MD) out of the Washington, DC suburbs plays Penn Wood out of the Philadelphia suburbs. In the nightcap at 7:30, the Millionaires play Owen J Roberts out of Pottstown. The consolation is at 6 pm on Tuesday, 12/30/08, with the championship to follow.

Linescore of the game:

Williamsport: 13-15-10-15=53
State College: 7-8-9-13=37
