The new basketball season got off to a flying start for the William Penn Bearcats on Friday night — even better than anyone had a right to expect.Never trailing against South Philadelphia, host William Penn took a 14-point into halftime against the seventh-ranked team in the state, survived a third-quarter run, then pulled away down the stretch for a promising 77-62 victory in the first night of the 2008 Bearcat Classic.

Williamsport turned in a similar performance against Reading in winning the opening contest, 84-67. After winning 30 straight games last season, Reading has now lost consecutive contests — counting last year’s stunning first-round exit in the PIAA playoffs — for the first time in two years.

The Bearcats will face the Millionaires in tonight’s championship final, with tipoff slated for 7:30. The consolation game between South Philly and Reading will tip at 6 p.m. More…
