Men’s basketball

Penn College fell behind NCAA Division III Wilkes by 15 at the half, and although it clawed its way back to within nine in the second half, wound up suffering its first loss of the season. Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) led the Wildcats with 25 points and Neil Baskerville (East Stroudsburg) added 18.

Facing Division III host Susquehanna University in the first round of the Pepsi-Weis Markets Tip-off Tournament, the Wildcats got off to a good start and built a 10-point first half lead at 32-22 with 4:29 until intermission before the Crusaders marched back for a 37-32 halftime lead. Penn College kept it close in the second half, tying the game at 41- and 43-all before Susquehanna pulled away to win by nine. Joiner scored a game-high 22 points and added 13 rebounds.

In Saturday’s consolation game against SUNY-Morrisville, Penn College finished third with a six-point win. Greg Solyak (Lancaster) led the Wildcats in scoring with 19 points and Joe Simon (Renovo) added 17. Penn College trailed through the first 10 minutes before taking charge late in the first half and opening a seven-point lead at the intermission. SUNY-Morrisville battled back to tie the score three times in the second half, the last time at 48 with 5:40 remaining. The Wildcats then went on a 14-8 run to close out the game. Solyak was named to the all-tournament team. King’s College took the championship with an 88-80 overtime win over Susquehanna.

Women’s basketball

Hosting NCAA Division III cross-town rival Lycoming, Penn College was plagued by turnovers while losing its first game of the season after three wins. Erica Logan (Montoursville) topped the Wildcats in scoring with 16 points, while Chelsey Holmes (Hughesville) and Kelsey Mack (Douglasville) each scored 12.

Against Polytechnic Institute of NYU in the first round of the Holiday Inn Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Penn State Harrisburg, Mack and Holmes each scored 11 points, but Penn College dropped its second game of the week. In Saturday’s tournament consolation game against Lancaster Bible College, Logan poured in 18 points, Mack 17 and Arlaya Morris (Williamsport) 16 as the Wildcats took third place. Mack was named to the all-tournament team.
