Lycoming volleyball drops tough five-setter against Messiah

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lycoming College volleyball team dropped a tough five-set match, 3-2, against Messiah on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Commonwealth Conference action.

The Lady Warriors (8-11, 0-2 Commonwealth) opened the match with a 25-19 win in the first set before dropping the second set 25-20 and the third set 25-22. The team rallied with a dominating fourth set, winning 25-10 and hitting .296 as a team, to fourth a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, Messiah capitalized on solid hitting, with 12 kills, to seal a 15-11 win.

Heather Frantz (Pine Grove, Pa.) and Bech Machella (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) each had double-digit kill games. Frantz led the way with 14 kills, two digs and four blocks while Machella posted 10 kills, 13 digs and one block.

Abby Myers (Shippensburg, Pa.) and Amy Sharlow (Fair Lawn, N.J.) continued to handle the setting duties. Myers posted 21 assists while Sharlow was credited with 14. Myers also had 13 digs and five service aces while Sharlow added nine digs and two aces.

Kelly Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) added six kills on 13 attempts for a .308 hitting percentage. Megan Schulze (Reedsville, Pa.) led the team in blocking with three solo blocks and one assisted block while also recording four kills.

Emily Abel (Spring Grove, Pa.) led the team in digs with 28.

Messiah finished the match with 62 kills in 198 attempts for a .141 hitting percentage. Lycoming posted 45 kills in 164 attempts to finish at .140.

The Lady Warriors will remain home this Saturday, Oct.4, hosting a one-day tournament at Lamade Gymnasium. Teams from Misericordia and PSU-Harrisburg will be in attendance. Games are scheduled for 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
