Lycoming College to host Family Weekend Sept. 19-21

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A variety of entertaining and educational activities are planned for Lycoming College’s annual Family Weekend, scheduled for Sept. 19-21.”Family Weekend offers students the opportunity to share a bit of campus life with their families,” said Melanie Taormina, Lycoming’s director of alumni relations. “With two walking tours, a riverboat cruise, sporting events, special meals and on-campus entertainment, students and their guests have plenty of activities to choose from as they spend their time together.”

Registration will be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday in Pennington Lounge, Academic Center and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Bell Lobby, just west of Pennington Lounge.

Dr. Amy Golahny, professor of art at the College, will guide a sculpture and stained glass walking tour to James V. Brown Library and the Christ Episcopal Church Friday afternoon. Italian neo-classical sculptures and stained glass by Lamb and Tiffany will be highlighted.

The annual Family Weekend Concert, which includes the musical talents of the Lycoming College Choir and Concert Band, will be held that evening in Clarke Chapel.

On Saturday morning, Regina Collins, assistant dean for freshmen, will present “Parenting the College Freshman, Part II” in the Jane Schultz Room, Wertz Student Center. Parents will also have the opportunity to meet with Lycoming’s professors at the Faculty Open House in Pennington Lounge.

The sisters of Gamma Delta Sigma will host the 18th annual Brandy Lee Sudol Auction on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the East Hall Coffeehouse, to memorialize their sister who died of Hodgkin’s Disease. All proceeds raised by the auction will be divided between a memorial scholarship and the Salvation Army.

Beth Ann Scruggs ’90 will give a walking tour of historic downtown Williamsport.

Several athletic events are scheduled throughout Family Weekend. On Saturday, Lycoming’s men’s soccer team will host Keystone College at 11 a.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. At 1:30 p.m., the Warrior football team will face long-time rival Susquehanna University at David Person Field. Also at 1:30 p.m., the women’s tennis team will host Albright College at Bruce Henry Park in Loyalsock Township.

A Hiawatha Riverboat Tour will be held that afternoon, and the annual Family Feud Tournament, hosted by the Black Student Union, will be held on campus in the evening. Following Family Weekend Dinner, the family-friendly show, “Magic of David Hall,” will be presented.

On Sunday, Catholic mass will be held at 9 a.m. at St. Boniface Church or family members may attend a Protestant Ecumenical Service, with guest speaker Professor Edward Gabriel and music by the Lycoming College Choir, in the College’s Clarke Chapel at 10:30 a.m.

During the weekend, the artwork of photographer M. Laine Wyatt will be on display in the Snowden Library Art Gallery. Viewing hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
